The coaching industry is rapidly expanding across India, with attractive advertisements drawing in parents. Many parents believe that these coaching classes are essential for their child’s future. However, Anand Kumar cautions against the potential harm to children.
Disadvantages Of Early Coaching
Anand Kumar emphasises the importance of avoiding undue pressure on children to study. Many students attend IIT coaching where the fees is sky-high, but they may not gain valuable problem-solving skills.
He notes that coaching often focuses on speed rather than accuracy, leading students to solve repeated problems without learning to approach questions creatively or develop innovative solutions. Instead of sending children to coaching prematurely, he suggests engaging with them as friends and nurturing their curiosity.
“In our country, the amount of innovation that should be there in the science and technology sector is not happening right now," he says.
What Is The Ideal Age To Begin JEE Coaching?
According to Anand Kumar, a child should start JEE coaching only after Class 10, allowing them to focus on schoolwork and homework before that. Starting coaching classes from Classes 1, 2 or 6 may have a negative impact on their interest in studying, he says. “Depression among students has become common, as some struggle to cope with the pressure. They should be encouraged to progress positively and be reminded that low marks do not define their worth," he adds.
Suggested Timeline For IIT JEE Preparation
The base for IIT entrance exam preparation starts from Class 8, but there is no need to join coaching classes for this. Usually, coaching begins with students of Classes 11 and 12.
Things To Focus For Class 8-10 Students: Focus on building strong foundations in maths and science, participate in Olympiads and other competitive exams and develop key skills for IIT, such as problem-solving and logical reasoning.
Things To Focus For Class 11-12 Students: Consider coaching specifically for IIT preparation, prepare for JEE Main and Advanced. Understand the JEE exam pattern and syllabus and prepare accordingly. Practise with JEE Main mock tests and sample papers.
